ABSTRACT:

Thermodynamically effective fixed charge densities of silver carbonate and zirconium vanadate polystyrene moulded membranes in contact with various 19 electrolyte solutions were estimated by methods (a) Teorell-Meyer-Sievers (b) Altug and Hair, and (c) Kobatake etal. based on the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The theoretical predictions for membrane potential are borne out quite satisfactorily by experimental results obtained with the above membranes. Counter-ions transference numbers and permselectivity of the membranes have also been calculated.
