3-hydroxy-3-m-tolyl-1-p-sulphonato (Na-Salt) phenyltriazene has been used for the spectrophotometric determination of Cu(ll). The reagent forms 1:2 yellow complex with copper at pH 6.4 to 6.9 with λmax at 402 nm. At working wavelength 418 nm, values of molar absorptivity, Sandefl's sensitivity, stability constant (log p) and free energy of formation were found to be 7,037 l/mole cm, 9.02 ng/cm2, 9.02. (from Harvey and Mannings method) and -12.30 K. Cal/mole respectively. Beer's law is obeyed in the entire concentration range studied i.e. 2.0 x 10-5 M to 1.2 x 10-4 M. It was possible to determine copper (6.35 mg) in presence of equimolar amount of eighteen cations and anions.
KEYWORDS:Hydroxy; spectrophotometric; phenyltriazene equimolar
