4-Hydroxyazobenzenes or 8-hydroxy-5-(phenylazo) quinoline react readily with formaldehyde and a variety of secondary amines to give Mannich bases. Mannich bases methiodides are converted into the corresponding substituted phenols by the displacement of the N*(CH3)R2 group in good yields.
KEYWORDS:Mannich bases; Mannich bases methiodide; phenols; 8-hydroxyquinolines; alkylation
