Heartwood of Acacia catechu, an indigenous tree, is a source of medicinally useful dye. The dye is used not only as a colouring matter but also used for treatment of certain diseases. By using water, methanol, and diethyl ether as solvents for extraction, a dark brown solid (brown solution), dark brown semi-solid (dark red solution), and mustard yellow solid (yellow solution) respectively are obtained. These dyes are expected to have different medicinal value and thus seem to be good natural colorants, serving the dual purpose.
