ABSTRACT:

A study was conducted to determine physicochemical characteristics and the levels of heavy metals Nl, Co. Zn. Pb and Li in ground water of Jamia Nagar. New Delhi -25 (India) and adjoining areas. Ten samples were collected from hand pumps to study the physicochemicai properties of water important parameters like pH, hardness. DO conductivity etc were deterined and found in the following ranges, pH - 7.42-8.09. chloride 136-66479 ppm. Alkalinity 226-540 ppm. DO 7.12 - 7.97 ppm. Sulphate 92-230 ppm. Hardness 301.76-980.72 ppm as CaCO,. conductivity 16 .4 x 104 -19.9 x 104 ohm 1 cm1and total soiids 550-7020ppm. The samples were then analysed for heavy metals were found in the ranges of Ni (.001 - 022) ppm Co (0 052-0,142 ppmi Zn (0.048-2.352 ppm), Pb (9 081 -0.179 ppm) ana Li (0 011 -0 066 ppm). These results show that the concentrations of Ni, Co, Zn and Li, in the ground water at jamia Nagar. New Delhi and adjoining areas is lower than prescribed or WHO whereas values of lead, hardness. chlorides are above the prescribed limits at most of the places.
