A product (C12H12O4) isolated from Sideritis romana L (Labiatae)1 and that obtained from Sideritis canariensis Ait2 was found identical and named Siderin (I) and characterised as 4-methyl, 6-dimethoxy coumarin from spectral data2. A reinvestigation of NMR spectrum of Siderin and its reported synthesis3 4,7-dimethoxy 5-methylcoumarin(I)as its structure. Keeping this in view, the author reports a new unambiguous synthesis of siderin (I).
