Chemistry of chalcones and substituted chalcones and their metal complexes continues to attract many researchers because of their applications in different fields like coordination chemistry, biology and spectrophotometry. The present paper reports (a) the synthesis of series of chalcones from 2-hydroxy-5-chloro-acetophenone with para nitro-methyl/benzoic acid and benzaldehyde, (b) the determination of pK values of chalcones and their complexation with La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(lll), Eu(lll), Gd(lll), Tb(lll), Dy(lll) and Ho(lll) ions.
