Schiff base complexes with metal ions showing diamagnetic behaviour find applications in hydrogenation, catalysis and medicine. Hence metal ions in such complexes are characterized by one of their fundamental properties viz. their ionicity values as on Pauling's electronegativity scale. An alternative simple reliable and relatively accurate method based on magnetic susceptibility has been suggested by the authors to determine ionicity of central metal ion. Variation in diamagnetism values with respect to substituents of different isom eric positions is used to calculate ionicity. Excellent agreement of these values with values obtained on the basis of Pauling's electronegativity scale has been shown.
