Schiff bases are important class of compounds on account of their value as anticancer agent. The presence of azo and methoxy groups in various compounds were found to exhibit antibacterial activity. Keeping this in view fifteen new schiff bases, bearing methoxy and azo groups have been synthesised by the reaction of 5-p- methoxy phenyl azo salicylaldehyde with aromatic amines and sulpha drugs. Some compounds were screened for antibacterial activity against S. aureus (gram/positive) and E.coli (gram negative) organism and they were found to be highly active against S. aureus organism and did not show significant activity against E.coli (gram negative) organisms.
