Physico-Chemical Characteristics of the Effluent Discharged from the Bhopal Glues and Chemical Industries and Study of its Pollutional Effects Seed Germination and Early Growth of A Few Plants

ABSTRACT:

The effluent discharged from Bhopal Glues and Chemicals (Private) Ltd was found alkaline. It was rich in total solids (TS), being 4335 .00 mg/l in January and 4049.00 mg/1 in June. Total dissolved solids (TDS) were 3813,00 mg/l and 3891.00 mg/l. while total suspended solids (TSS) were 521.00 mg/l and 158.00 mg/l, Oil and grease were 195.50 mg/l and 152.40 mg/l in January and June respectively. A comparison with the prescribed limits of pH, total solids, chlorides and BOD for the disposal of industrial effluents revealed that total dissolved solids (TDS) chlorides and BOD in the effluent far exceeds the permissible limits prescribed by ISI. However, pH of the effluent was within the permissible limit. Effect of three concentrations (25%, 50% and 100%) of the effluent was studied on seed germination and early growth of seedlings of Acacia farnasiana, A nilotica, Butea monosperma, Cassia fistula, C. occidentals and Sesbarua sesban. The results have indicated that germination percentage is decreased with the increase in effluent concentration in all six species studied. Highly adverse effects of the glue factory effluent were also observed on the growth and development of root and shoot of the young seedlings.
