Transition metal complexes of the general formulae [M(DHAS)2]. where M= Mn(ll). Fe(ll), Co(ll). Ni(ll) and Cu(II); [M(DHAS)2SO4] where M= VO2+ and 3-acetyl-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2, 4(3H) dione semicarbazone (DHAS) (Dehydroacetic acid semicarbazone) have been prepared and characterised. The ligand coordinates through ONO donor atoms, behaving as a monobasic tridentate ligand. The metal chelates have been characterised on the basis of their analytical data, conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility studies and infrared, electronic and ESR spectral data: The ligand as well as the metal chelates have exhibited significant fungitoxicity against a fungal species, Rhizoctonia solani, the causative organism of the sheath blight in rice and groundnut plants. The fungitoxicity of the metal chelates was found to be in the following order: Cu > Ni > Fe > VO2+ > Mn > Co.
