Some of the newly synthesised chalcones (la-j) were reacted with phenylene diamine in ethanol in presence of little aqueous NaOH for three hours to afford the formation of substituted -N--(para-aminophenyl) chalconeimines (Ila-j). The products obtained were washed with 50% water-alcohol mixture and recrystailised from ethanol. Characterisation of these compounds was done on the basis of chemical properties and spectral analysis. The above compounds were further subjected to antimicrobial test against the test organisms, Escherichia coli. Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhii, Shigella dysentary and Proteus mirabilis. MIC values of these compounds against the test organisms were determined by serial dilution method. The compounds containing chloro and dimethylamino group as substituents have been found to be very effective antimicrobial agents.
KEYWORDS:synthesised; para-aminophenyl; phenylene diamine
