With a view to study the effect of nitro group on the piperidone ring carbon and hydrogen resonances few 3 and 3,5, substituted 2,6-bis-(o-nitrophenyl)piperidin-4-ones and the corresponding para and meta compounds are prepared. The 13C and 1H NMR spectra are recorded. The 13C and 1H chemical shifts are discussed in terms of steric, polar and conformational effects. The shielding effect of o-nitro group is compared with that of o-chloro substituent and ortho O3CH group.
KEYWORDS:nitrophenyl; chemical conformational
