Twelve primary dithizonates with the formula RTeX2.HDz have been prepared by the reactions of dithizone (H2Dz) with aryltellurium(iv) trihalides, RTeX3 (R = phenyl, p-anisyl, p-hydroxyphenyl and 3-methyl-4-hydroxyphenyl; X = Cl, Br, I). The complexes have been subjected to elemental analyses, conductance measurements, molecular weight determination, infrared and proton nuclear magnetic reasonance spectral studies. Solution studies reveal their weak to 1 : 1 electrolyte type behaviour. Spectral studies indicate the linkage of tellurium through S and N atom of azo group of the ligand, thus giving a pentacoordinated tellurium atom in these primary dithizonates.
