Air-dried and powdered roots of Syzgium cumini were extracted with 80% ethanol. The concentrated extract was resolved into water soluble and insoluble portions. The concentrated water soluble, fraction was successively extracted with nonpolar to polar solvents. The ethylacetate soluble portion was concentrated under reduced pressure. The concentrated portion was loaded over silica gel column and eluted with elutropic solvents. Eluate checked on silica gel plate for homogeneity. The benzene-ethylacetate (6:4 v/v) fraction gave a compound sc-1 on crystallization from methanol, m.p. 180°C.
KEYWORDS:Syzygium cumini; Isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside
