The effective force constant changes for even symmetry modes around substitutional impurities in ionic crystals have been studied in terms of simple classical ionic crystal model for the potential energy. It has been shown that Coulomb and second-neighbour repulsive interactions can make appreciable contributions to the effective force-constant changes. These contributions are symmetry dependent.
